DES MOINES, Iowa -- At the end of the day, most people can't wait to get home.
Gov. Tom Vilsack steps out of his suit and tie each night and into his cap and running suit.
Vilsack said he that he finds the cold air inviting and the freezing temps invigorating.The governor said one night the windchill was minus 20 and he ran eight miles."When you wear Gortex and a mask, you can run forever," he said.The governor said there's a lot to think about in the job and running is the only time he's alone.Bryan Thompson, a state trooper, follows behind the governor during his nightly runs.Thompson said he keeps Vilsack in sight and keeps a distance to let him run.Vilsack said it takes about two miles to get into a rhythm, and he listens to his favorite group ZZ Top when he runs. He also said he's dropped two suit sizes from running.
